Custom Picture Frames: 2 Mistakes You Don't Want To Make

Blog

Picture frames can really make or break a photo. They can add emphasis, set the tone, and enhance the overall aesthetic of an image. That's why it's so important to get custom picture framing right, especially if you're doing it yourself.

This article explores a few common DIY mistakes people make when framing pictures.

Failure to Leave Enough Room for the Picture

A custom picture frame should allow enough room to accommodate the thickness of the picture, mount, and glass. To get an accurate measurement, place the picture on top of the mount and measure from the outside edge of the frame to the edge of the picture.

Another thing to consider is the width of the frame's rabbet or rebate. This is the part of the frame that holds the picture in place. If the rabbet is too narrow, the picture could fall out of the frame. And if it's too wide, the picture can move around inside the frame, which could damage it.

Also, make sure to leave enough space between the edge of the frame and the picture so that the glass or acrylic doesn't come into contact with the image. Such contact can cause the picture to stick to the glass and make it difficult to remove.

Ultimately, if you don't leave enough room, your picture will be cramped and look unfinished. So, take the time to measure and ensure everything fits snugly but not too tightly.

Using the Wrong Materials

Among the biggest mistakes people make when framing pictures is using the wrong materials. For example, some people use adhesives, such as glue or tape, to attach the picture to the mount. This can cause the picture to warp or buckle over time.

It's best to use an acid-free, double-sided adhesive strip to attach the picture to the mount. This type of adhesive won't damage the picture and will hold it in place for years to come.

Another common mistake is using the wrong type of glass or acrylic. Regular glass is not recommended for framing pictures because it can easily break and doesn't offer much protection from UV rays. Instead, you should use acrylic, which is shatter-proof and does a better job of blocking UV rays.

Finally, make sure to use the appropriate hardware to hang the frame. Cheap hardware can damage your walls or come loose over time. So, invest in quality hardware that will keep your frame hanging straight and looking great for a long time.

My sister is an agricultural teacher who raises beef cattle in her spare time. Because she loves her cows so much, I knew this piece of rustic wall art would make her smile. As I imagined, she loved her gift. On this blog, you will discover where to buy unique types of wall art.
